February 2012 New Song Release Roundup

We were all sitting around the newsroom here at SongOnLyrics tossing around ideas on how we could better serve our visitors (you). After racking our collective brains over energy drinks for what seemed like hours, my editor came up with the idea of gathering songs that were released in the month of February 2012 and putting them into some kind of list that would make it convenient for you guys to review what happened during the month.

Now granted, this is no easy task in this business just due to the volume of music that gets released each and every month! But we thought February would be a good place to start because for some reason February has been historically deemed a “slow” month in the music industry. Maybe it’s due to the fact that it’s short or maybe it’s just a month when everyone is hunkering down enduring winters onslaught and not thinking about buying music.

Even with those factors taken into consideration, the amount of music that was released in February 2012 is still immense. So needless to say, once we settled on this idea, we still didn’t know quite how to present it to you. At first we thought we could do a “Top Ten” format that seems so popular but that was soon dismissed because how do you determine exactly what is the top ten?

So here is what we settled on. We thought a good way to start was just to try and list the songs that had some sort of “impact” during the month. And even this will be trial and error but we’re going to give it a shot and see how you guys like it. What we would also like is YOUR input. After all, you are the ones who are out there doing the buying! And no matter how hard we try, it’s certain that we will miss some releases that should be on the list. Now that we have the formalities out of the way, let’s get started shall we?

The best place to start is at the beginning of the month and it seemed as if February 2012 was getting off to quite the start. Take a look at these releases and see if you agree as we have some real industry heavyweights putting out some new music.

Kelly Clarkson – “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)
Paul McCartney – “My Valentine”
Madonna – “Give Me All Your Luvin
Will.i.am Featuring Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez – “T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)”
Droplick Murphys – “Going Out In Style”
Kelly Rowland Featuring Big Sean – “Lay It On Me”
Childish Gambino – “All The Shine”

Let’s have a look at some of the official videos for these songs:

Kelly Clarkson – “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)”

Madonna – Give Me All Your Luvin’

Will.I.am – T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)

Now you have to agree that is quite an impressive start to the month! And as I stated earlier that wasn’t all the releases because we aren’t including albums in the release list and there were plenty of those! So for the most part, when February 2012 kicked off we had plenty of new material to listen to in just about every genre.

As we moved along things quieted by only somewhat as you’ll see from the releases that came in the second week of the month.

Allo’ Darlin – “Capricornia”
Blink-182 – “After Midnight”
Emeli Sande – “Next To Me
Goldfrapp – “Melancholy Sky”
Jess Mills – “Pixelated People”
Snow Patrol – “In The End”

Emeli Sandé – Next To Me

Snow Patrol – In The End:

Week two certainly was not populated with the marquee names as when the month first debuted, but you still have some releases from groups and artists that have one hell of a fan following. If you look at what was released in the first half of February 2012, you have yourself quite a diverse and entertaining playlist and I’m pretty confident you would have to agree!

So now we have reached the halfway point in February 2012. Let’s push onward and see what the last 2 weeks had in store for us. Week 3 definitely brought us some tunes to keep us warm as you’ll see. Granted, we had more releases this week but I hate to say it, most were lost in the shuffle and never made it onto anyone’s radar!

Cher Lloyd- “Want U Back”
Foo Fighters – “These Days”
Gym Class Heroes – “Ass Back Home
Kasabian – “Goodbye Kiss”
James Morrison – “Slave To The Music”

Cher Lloyd – Want U Back ft. Astro:

James Morrison – Slave To The Music:

The month is now about over and let’s see how it ends up. Many in this business feel that the endo of the month is not the best time to release new music because people have other thoughts on their minds like paying their bills and making ends meet! So with said, let’s take a look at how February 2012 ended up.

Birdy – “1901”
The Black Keys – “Gold On The Ceiling
Chiddy Bang – “Ray Charles”
Dappy feat. Brian May – “Rockstar”
Ed Sheeran – “Drunk”
Rebecca Ferguson – “Too Good To Lose”
Tinchy Stryder – “Bright Lights”

Chiddy Bang – Ray Charles:

As you can see, February 2012 ended up fairly strong. But I do want to add one thing here. I didn’t include the last few days of the month because of the way it fell this year. Now don’t worry because we will be covering those releases when we do a round up of March 2012. Sound fair? Ok, now what we would like is YOUR INPUT! Maybe we missed something! So take a quick few seconds and let us know what you think!
