Song On Lyrics Musical Week In Review – March 18th – 23rd 2012 – Important New Albums

Holy smokes! Talk about a week full of album releases! The week of March 19th 2012 was certainly a busy one with tons of albums getting released. Maybe this is a sign of spring drawing nearer or maybe it’s a sign that record labels think the majority of the population is just starved for new material. Whatever the case may be, last week was one of the busiest weeks for new albums that we have seen in quite some time. Now, let’s take a quick look at what happened last week.

The album that probably caused the most stir last week, at least in this writers opinion, is of course “The Hunger Games Official Sound Track”. The timing of the release was marketing at its finest. First, the album gets released early in the week, then the movie itself debuts on Friday of the same week. And how many of you went to see the “Hunger Games” and then bought the album? From all indications, it looks like a lot of you did! So far the album is ruling the roost over at iTunes and probably will soon be doing the same over at Amazon.

This is actually quite surprising if you ask me. Sure, you have a pair of Taylor Swift songs, contributions from the Civil Wars and Miranda Lambertt, but a good majority of the 16 track album bears contributions from what many would consider non household names such as Secret Sisters, Punch Brothers and The Carolina Chocolate Drops. But what is nice, is that it doesn’t seem to matter as this album looks like it’s going to kick some serious coin into the cash registers.

Now if you like your music just a little more edgy with a heavy dose of testosterone thrown in, and evidently many of you do based on the Billboard Rock Album Charts, you needn’t look any farther than the top of list and see that Adrenaline Mob released their first studio album titled “Omerta”. The album debuted in the top 5 over at Billboard and this is definitely one you want to get your hands on and play real loud if you have any neighbors you don’t really care for.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you like your sounds just a bit lighter with a tinge of electronics then take a look at Paul Weller’s “Sonik Kicks”. This is the fourth studio album from Mr. Weller and the album had a decent week in sales with a little over 30,000 sold. Granted, nothing earth shattering, but not bad for one of the oldtimers. By the way, Weller is a brisk 53 years old.

If you’re a hip hop fan, be sure to check out Diggy Simmons’ debut album titled “Unexpected Arrival”. As you well know, Diggy is the son of Joseph “Rev.Run” Simmons from the legendary Run-D.M.C who were groundbreakers in the hip hop genre way back in the late 1980’s. It will be interesting to see how well the 17yr old Diggy will fair on just his merit alone. From early reviews, it looks like the young man will be a force to reckon with in the coming years.

Wow, looks like I’ve gone on way to long for this episode! As you can see from the list we have compiled, it doesn’t matter where your musical tastes might lie, there is something for everyone. If you think we might have missed a release, or you want to give us your opinion on any one of the albums that you see here, we encourage it! Just leave us a comment below.
